Reasons to Drop a Series
June 22, 2008 at 6:17 pm under anime, randomI recently dropped Code Geass R2 and I was thinking about why I drop series. What are the reasons to drop a particular series? I think there are numerous reasons but I will get into that in a moment. Every time a new season starts I always try to give series a chance. I watch about 1 or 2 episodes before I decided to drop it. I think most people do this as well. You can’t really judge a series with just one episode so I guess people watch at least one more. Every series should get a fair chance. So what are some of the numerous reasons I or someone else may drop a series?
Series is Just Plain Stupid
Generally, this reason occurs either after watching one episode or it might occur before you watch an episode when reading an season preview. Anyways, this reason is an objective one. One person may consider a series a great series but others will find it stupid or just plain retard. Usually this can lead to arguments. I guess that is what chat rooms are really for or maybe not because naming calling is usually what ends up happening. Once name calling happens you pretty much have lost your argument right there. These arguments about whether a particular series is stupid can go on forever and they are generally pointless due to the objectivity of the argument.
Series is Just Not Your Taste
This also is a very objective reason. Everyone has their own taste and like different things about a particular series. Honestly, I think the world would be a boring place if everyone had the same taste. I guess that’s is why they have so many different types of anime out there. Arguments are not really cause by this reason. They sometimes stop when someone says that a particular series is not your taste. I seems that people can understand this reason a bit better than others. Not entirely sure why. Plainly, the only reason for this is probably because of the rule that everyone has a different taste. That maybe the simplest reason for it all.
Series Has Become Boring
When a series becomes boring, it starts a lot further into a series than the other reasons. I think it can start around maybe the 5 or 6th episode but that depends on how long the series is. But it is different for each person. Boredom can set in just about anytime but usually well before the end or middle of the series. If you have come almost to the end you might as well just finish. And if you have watched this series that far you are not bored with it.
You Just Don’t Have Time Anymore
We know that sometimes life can get busy and you just don’t have time to watch 10 series or more series anymore. (I think some people really watch more than 10.) People don’t tend to drop just one series when they use this reason. They usually drop more than one. But I guess it depends on how many series you are watching at one time or how busy you are.
When you come this reason, you start to evaluate series and see what you can drop. You basically go through the list of reasons, some I mentioned already, to make your decision. Has this series become stupid? Has it got boring? I’m I really enjoying this series? Will I really miss anything if I don’t finish?
After you decide to drop a series, you might just put off the rest of the series that you didn’t drop. This depends of course on how busy you. This reason doesn’t always lead to dropping of series. Hiatus is probably the result.
You are Too Far Behind
I personally used this excuse to drop Code Geass R2. Usually, I use this reason when I’m really far behind a current series. Sometimes I move a series to hiatus or I will drop it totally. Rarely, do I use solely this reason. I use this reason in combination with other reasons. Being too far behind might be a sort of crappy reason but I use it sometimes when I just don’t care that much about a series. Or I don’t really find it enjoyable anymore. I use this also reason to move on to bigger and brighter things.
Sometimes instead of dropping a series, I just put it on hiatus. But that rarely happens and most of the time I don’t ever go back to it. I don’t put many series on hiatus. It is either drop it or continue.
New Season Coming Up
Every time a new season is coming up, I look at what I’m currently watching see if I want to continue with a series. I sort of look at what I need to make room for. Sometimes I don’t have to use this reason because if the previous season series are ending before the summer then I don’t have to worry. Really I use this reason when I’d rather just watching something new. The new season might have something more interesting to see than what I’m watching. Of course, this reason happens before a new season starts. You might drop a series but then again change your mind after finding the new season’s series crappy.
Conclusion
Not really sure if these are all the reasons out there. I just wrote out some of the reasons I drop a series. I use them in combination with each. One reason is not always enough. I think dropping a series sometimes can be a hard thing to do. I want to see as much anime as I can but that is impossible because we don’t have all the time in the world to watch anime.
I have heard that some people never drop a series. I’m not convinced that is entirely possible. At some point, due to the number of series, you have to drop something eventually. That is if you ever want to get to the series you really want to watch. Or see anymore series or something new. You will not be able complete your want-to-see list if you do that. Of course, that list is always never ending. So it might not be possible even if you drop series.
You shouldn’t waste your time on series you don’t really like. You only have so much time to watch anime and still get done the things you have to get done. I used to not drop series but that was back then when I didn’t see much anime. I tended to like just about all the anime I watched. But I have changed since watching fansubs. There is just too much anime out there.

Your reasons cover all of mine. The way it goes for me is like this: I usually stay with a series no matter how stupid it gets. But time is always in short supply, so when I’m overloaded I simply let my heart decides which to watch and which to delay. Sometimes, I do get to catch up, and those series become, shall I say, resurrected. But whenever a new season comes around, those that are still in delay almost always get dropped to make room for the new shows.
Even having said that, there have been a few exceptional cases where after I’ve totally dropped them I brought them back to life later on. For example, “Now and Then, Here and There” (5 years after); “Inuyasha” (on and off, just couldn’t stand the filler episodes); and “Bleach” (I always skip the filler arcs.)

I hardly drop anything. I think it’s a combination of picking stuff I think I’ll like, but I’m pretty forgiving for the most part and trying to find something to like about it. I might be thinking to myself, man this show sucks, but still watch it for some strange sick reason.

I just don’t have time anymore.
Great reason. I haven’t necessarily dropped anything, but I haven’t even finished my Gundam 00 watching yet, and it’s almost a month now.

I rent my anime from Netflix. Before I start a review, I look at every episode on the DVD. If the series seems boring, I will write just one review on it, tell my reasons, and that’s it. Lately, the only thing that I’ve dropped so far is School Rumble, but I wrote a review on it anyway. However, I have only one completed series to date, but my blog is only seven months old, and I have quite a ways to go.

Too many episodes is gets me to drop. I still have some anime I own to finish, but I don’t. Not because there’s not enough time or the particular series has too many eps, but I feel like it’s hard to watch a series when there’s so much there to see. Stupid is not a reason I’ve had to drop something yet.
