Lucky Star Confusion

I liked the Lucky Star anime however I’m confused. What exactly is suppose to be? Slice-of-life or comedy?

Well, here is what I did think of it. I really liked the character designs and the animation style. It’s great. The girls are all very cute and the seiyuu are good as well. The plot doesn’t seem to really exist. Just seemed like everyday happenings between several school girls with perhaps some jokes. That is really the main reason why I question if Lucky Star is suppose to be a funny series or a slice-of-life series.

The bad things about the first episode are that the jokes seem to come very fast and I miss a lot of what is funny. For a person who is not fluent in Japanese, such as myself, this first episode was hard to keep up with all the dialogue that was going on. Not totally sure if that is the reason I had a hard time following it or the fact I’m a bit tired now. I don’t know but anyways this is a hard anime to decide if I will like it or not. Everything is perfect except for the flow of the story and the lack of a plot line.

I want to see more of it just to see if gets any better. My initial feelings of Lucky Star are the same as what I had with Pani Poni Dash (PPD) when it first started. Mostly in the area of jokes, when PPD first started I didn’t really get most of the jokes but as the series went on I found that I understood more and more of the jokes. Hopefully, Lucky Star is the same.

I feel that Lucky Star has potential but if the first episode is any indication of what the rest will be like it will lose ground real fast. Maybe this series is totally meant for the Japanese otaku and not us American viewers. Who knows. But for the time being I’m keeping this on my watch list at least for another episode or two.

BTW, that was the longest conversation of how to eat different foods that I’ve ever watched. Geez! “How do you eat an Oreo cookie?”

It’s a slice of life comedy. Think of it as a Japanese Seinfeld.
Anyway after the food talk and it’s long windup, the jokes start the flow pretty frequently from then on. There doesn’t seem to be all that many sight gags so you will either need a sub or a very decent understanding of the Japanese language to get the humor.

It’s Azumanga Daioh style humor, except geared towards a more otaku-type fanbase. Probably not everyone’s cup of tea, which is why there’s a lot of hate against it.
